What is a pressure switch?

A pressure switch or pressostat is a pressurized switch. Such a switch will turn electrical equipment on or off at a certain pressure of air, gas or liquid. As that pressure increases, when the set pressure is reached, the contact will switch, when that pressure drops, the contact will switch back.

The difference between the switching-in pressure and the switching-out pressure, is called the switching hysteresis or pressure band. This prevents a pump from continuously starting and stopping when the measured pressure is above and below the set pressure.
