Prepare your compressor system for winter

If you order pneumatic components from Pneuparts, you probably have a compressor too!
With winter approaching, it is important to keep this machine and all pneumatic systems in TOP condition.Often problems can be prevented by doing a few small checks yourself.

"Keeping your Pneumatic system in top condition yourself is very easy!"
Service mechanic Thijs gives tips on getting your system winter-ready.

Vocht in het steem kan bij lage temperaturen bevriezen.
Tip: isoleer de blootliggende afvoeren en leidingen. Tapregelmatig vocht af .

Moisture in the system can freeze at low temperatures
If there is moisture in the pipes, condensation can occur. Moisture in the system can get into the machines and freeze.
TIP: Check your dehumidification system and see if the drainage hoses are frost-free.

TIP: Excess moisture in the boiler is easily drained via an automatic condensate drain. In addition to excess moisture in the system, a condensate drain also prevents rust.

TIP: It is not permitted to discharge oil-containing condensate directly into the sewer system. After the moisture has been removed from the compressed air system by a condensate drain. The condensate cannot simply be discharged into the sewer or surface water without bringing the oil content to within legal standards. Oil/water separators are a reliable, effective, efficient and above all environmentally friendly solution to separate oil from condensate.

Prevent impact of rain or snow in the air intake
Rain, heat, cold, humidity, sun, dust, wind ... all these elements can cause serious damage to a compressor. Preferably place the compressor inside, if that is not possible make sure that the air inlet is free of blockages and avoid impact of rain and snow.

TIP: Check regularly that the air inlet openings are adequately protected from impact, dust and other debris. If not cover them with a hood or filter.

Check compressed air filters

Filters are installed to clean compressed air and achieve a certain air purity (quality). To provide this clean compressed air, air filter elements must be replaced regularly. Air filters operate under harsh conditions, for example, differences in pressure, temperature and humidity. After 12 months, or sometimes sooner, most filters need replacement.
Blowing a filter clean damages the filter material and is not recommended.

TIP: Check air filters monthly and replace, if necessary. Contamination will cause your compressed air system to malfunction.

Leaks cost money. In some cases €190 per year.
80% of compressed air system leaks are easy to detect and fix yourself by checking the connections and hoses. An inspection does not take much time but can save a lot of costs.

TIP: Repair leaks. For example, look for:
  • Leaking couplings.
  • Poorly fitting connections hose barbs or hose clamps.
  • Porous hose.

Check the oil level
Replenishing compressor oil is important, if there is too little or no oil left, it can damage or even destroy the pump.
Oil is important for lubrication, cooling and it absorbs residue, such as metal particles and combustion residue, from the compressor pump. Fresh oil will make the compressor run more smoothly. Contamination will prevent the engine from reaching its best performance and may even damage the compressor pump.
Check the amount of oil in the compressor through the gauge glass or with the dipstick. If necessary, top up the oil or replace all the oil.
TIP: Changing oil is easy to do yourself. Use the drain valve or unscrew the oil sight glass from the compressor to easily drain oil from the reservoir.
  • To easily drain the oil from the pump, turn on the compressor for a few minutes. The oil will warm up and flow out of the oil reservoir more easily.
  • TURN OFF THE COMPRESSOR!
  • Remove the filler cap, allowing a little air to enter. Then unscrew the drain plug and catch the oil with a container. Drain the entire reservoir until no more oil flows out. Then screw the drain plug back in.
  • New oil is added through the filler opening. Do this with a funnel so you don't spill.
  • Check the oil level regularly with the oil dipstick or oil sight glass. Certainly do not pour more into the reservoir than is indicated. If it does, unscrew the drain plug to drain the oil out. When you have filled or dropped to the correct amount, screw the filler cap back on.

Cleaning the oil cooler and refrigeration dryer
A refrigeration dryer has a fan that blows a stream of air through the unit. This can leave dirt or dust behind in the refrigeration dryer. And can cause the device to overheat and/or clog up.
Using a blow gun with a curling hose makes it easy to remove accumulated dirt.
