What are ISO standards and what are there for pneumatic cylinders?

In this article, we will tell you all about the different ISO standards that we know within pneumatics. We will first briefly explain what ISO standards are exactly, after which we will take a leisurely walk past all the different ISO standards. After reading this article, you will know exactly which ISO standards there are and what the specifications of a specific ISO certification are

Pneumatic cylinders that are made according to ISO standards can be interchanged in terms of dimensions. All installation dimensions of these cylinders are the same. The most common ISO standards are ISO 6432 and ISO 15552.

What are ISO standards?

ISO stands for International Organization for Standardization. ISO standards are internationally recognized guidelines. It is to ensure that products, services, and systems meet the highest levels of quality, safety, and performance.

In addition to the most common ISO standards, there are also other ISO standards for different types of air cylinders.
Below we explore the various types of ISO cylinders.

The different ISO standards for pneumatic cylinders

ISO 6432

This ISO cylinder is also seen as a 'mini pneumatic cylinder'. This is because they have a smaller diameter Ø 8 – 25 mm. Due to the round and compact shape, they are very suitable in confined spaces and where precise is applicable.

There are also round air cylinders with diameters from Ø 32 to 63 mm, but these are not covered by a standard.

Ronde cilinders - ISO

ISO 15552 cilinder - cylinder

ISO 15552

The ISO 15552 cylinders are available in different sizes, strokes and properties. This ensures that there is always a suitable cylinder for every application.

These ISO cylinders are available in diameters from Ø 32 to 320 mm. Because the ISO 15552 cylinders are interchangeable, this saves time and costs for maintenance and repair.

ISO 6431

This standard expired in 2004. The main dimensions of pneumatic cylinder from Ø 32 – 320 mm were described. These have remained unchanged, so ISO 6431 cylinders are interchangeable with ISO 15552 cylinders.

ISO 21287 / UNITOP

This standard describes the relevant dimensions of pneumatic compact cylinders from Ø 20 to 100 mm. The matching mounting or fastening materials can also be used with ISO 15552 cylinders so that they are also generally interchangeable and usable.

The ISO 21287 is the sequel of UNITOP standardized short stroke cylinders. Difference between ISO 21287 cylinders and Unitop cylinders is in the dimensions, they are not interchangeable.

Compacte cilinders - compacte cylinders

ISO 15524

This standard defines relevant dimensions of pneumatic short stroke cylinders from Ø20 to Ø100mm. Although these cylinders are very short stroke, we recommend using ISO 21287 cylinders whenever possible. ISO 15524 cylinders are too infrequently used to compile an interchangeability list.

ISO 8139

Ball heads (Rod eyes with spherical bearing according to the standard) ensure optimum interchangeability, as well as savings potential.

ISO 8140

The standard specifies the sizes and threads of clevises (rod eyes in the standard). Many materials and methods of pin assembly are available.
