When to choose double-acting pneumatic cylinders

When do you choose double-acting pneumatic cylinders?

In this article, we focus on a specific type within the air cylinders: the double-acting pneumatic cylinder. We'll start by looking at what exactly a double-acting cylinder is and look at how it works in great detail. Then we zoom in on the application of double-acting cylinders. Next, we map out all the advantages that this type of pneumatic cylinder has. This way, after reading this article, you'll know for sure whether double-acting cylinders are the right ones for your system.

What is a Double Acting Pneumatic Cylinder?

A double-acting pneumatic cylinder is a cylinder that can apply force in two directions, both compressive and tensile force. Compared to a single-acting pneumatic cylinder that can only exert compressive or tensile force, it is possible to do both with a double-acting cylinder.

A double-acting cylinder also always has two compressed air connections. At the bottom it is possible to apply compressive force (output stroke) and at the top it is possible to create pulling force (input stroke).

How a double-acting cylinder works

To make a double-acting cylinder work, connect compressed air to both sides of the cylinder. The compressed air allows the piston to move in and out. This is because a double-acting cylinder does not have an internal spring that causes the piston to return to its original position.

Here, double-acting pneumatic cylinders are often used

  • Double-acting cylinders are used in the machine tools, for example in milling machines or lathes. They control cutting tools and other components.

  • Double-acting cylinders are also often used in robotics. They control the movement of robotic arms and other components.

  • When transporting material, such as conveyor systems or lifting equipment.

The advantages of double-acting cylinders

One advantage of a double-acting cylinder is their ability to make a precise and controlled movement in both directions. They are also well suited for applications that require high force and fast movements, such as in milling machines or lathes.

The Differences Between Double-Acting and Single-Acting Cylinders

  • Double-acting cylinders have two compressed air connections, allowing the piston to move in both directions. A single-acting cylinder has only one compressed air connection.

  • Double-acting cylinders are suitable for applications that require both power and speed. Single-acting cylinders are very suitable for light assembly work.
