Clean air at Zwarte Cross Festival 2022

 

In July, it's time again for the Zwarte Cross Festival. And that means a lot of fun, but also a lot of waste that is left behind on the festival grounds after all the partying. In a valiant effort to make the Zwarte Cross Festival more sustainable, the organization is teaming up with FHT compressed air from Deurne in Brabant. Their solution? Shooting away the drinking cups by means of compressed air, entirely in the style of the 80s game Duck Hunt.

During the festival, a real shooting gallery will be set up with four cup cannons in a Duck Hunt-like setting, the hit Nintendo game from the 80s. The cup cannons resemble a strange vehicle with a barrel and a moped seat. These are used to shoot up to 10 cups at a time into the waste bin, which are then recycled. After which a prize will be raffled off among the marksmen every day. FHT Air and the organization hope that the addition of a (nostalgic) game element will make visitors realize that they should throw away their waste into the bin.

A lot of waste
The visitors to the festival leave behind an average of several hundred tons of waste. The universal drinking cups made of PET material alone account for 50 tons of waste. Cleaning up and separating this mountain of waste has been a thorn in the side of the festival organization for years. That can and must change, the organization believes.
